Eat, Read, Hugo

In early 2006, I rented a tiny office at the Richard Hugo House, a non-profit house dedicated to writers in Seattle not far from where we live in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. I wrote the majority of The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry in that space at the House. The staff was vastly supportive, and despite the interruption from an occasional ghost (a story of its own), I became a big supporter of the house and its mission.

So, Seattle celebrity chef Tom Douglas and I will be hosting a special fundraiser on behalf of Hugo House called Eat, Read, Hugo. (Ironically, the title is based on Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, whose blurb features prominently on the cover of my own book...) Below are details from the Hugo House site.

6 to 10 p.m., April 24, 2008
Palace Ballroom, 2100 5th Avenue, Seattle

EAT: Dinner by Tom Douglas Restaurants
READ: Keynote speaker Kathleen Flinn (hey, that's me!). I'll be talking about the experiences of writing the book and life inside Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Paris
HUGO:
Learn more about Hugo House and help support our programs by participating in a mini-auction (seven fabulous items including trips, foodie delights and more) and a raise-the-paddle for the Hugo Literary Series and youth programs. One of the prizes will be hands-on three-hour cooking lesson with yours truly for up to six people in your home or a friend's -- with the results served as lunch or dinner, with wine.

Nancy Guppy, of “City a Go-Go” and the Seattle Channel, will emcee.

Interested? Tickets are $150 each and include a four-course dinner based on recipes from Sharper. They opted to pair the mustard sauce with chicken, rather than Washington state rabbit, which Tom had on the original menu. They'll also be serving some of my favorite recipes from the book, including the ahi tuna ceviche, provencal spread, carmelized onion quiche and roasted duck. You can see the full menu on the Hugo House site.
For tickets, contact the fabulous Chris Leasure at (206) 322-7030 or email her at chrisleasure@hugohouse.org. And ask to be put at one of my tables! We'll hang out.
