The Big Food Writing Contest

Just a reminder - the deadline for Bumbershoot's "Food for Thought" contest, is 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 2 (for all the details and an electronic entry form, open this link). To enter, compose a short essay (500-word max) focused on a memorable food experience -- pleasant or not so much.

And I can't quite get over that I'm judging this with the incomparable Tom Douglas. I've long been a fan of his for years. We'll be discussing the winning entry (and some of the non-winning ones) during our chat labeled "F is for Food," on Saturday September 5th (noon-1:15 p.m.).

The Seattle Times has promised to publish the winning essay and treat winner and a guest to two Platinum VIP passes to Bumbershoot.

If you are a talented writer, here is an opportunity for that talent to pay off big time (probably for the first time!)

Please just take a look at this essay contest - the grand prize is a custom home on the Big Island:

but hurry because the contest ends 8/11/09 (and if you are a talented writer I bet you procrastinate, right?)

and if you don’t care to live in Hawaii, you could flip it or it would make a great vacation rental!

There will be a substantial donation to schools, AND teachers will judge the essays.
They offered Oprah the exclusive to award the home (and Oprah loves teachers right? Hey who knows? Stranger things have happened.)

So what is my interest in this? Why am I writing you?
Well, I entered the competition and want to see it get enough entries so that they can award the home.
They need 6000 which sounds like a lot - but if you think about it, the odds of winning are better than any state lottery.
I know I wrote a good essay and I actually have a chance at winning, but what’s more, I believe that this competition is a win/win/win proposition.
It was on local morning news program and I also found a write up on
I also know the sponsors personally for ten years and know the contest is being run with integrity.
Any questions? Feel free to email or call me. Shelly 866-999-3287
